There are plenty of reasons to celebrate the 4thof July this year, despite the slumping economy and the differences of political opinion among us. Freedom is always worth celebrating. Great sacrifices were made by the American colonies in order to bring us this freedom, and we’ve celebrated and honored those sacrifices for more than 200 years.
And the sacrifices continue.
On Saturday a funeral was held in our community for a young man who gave his life serving our country in Afghanistan. It was no surprise that the church was packed, that honor guards representing police, fire and military were on hand and in force. What was extraordinary were the members of this community turning out by the thousands, lining the procession route with signs reading “Thank You” and “Our Hero” and waving American flags, large and small. These were Americans, celebrating the life and sacrifice of one of their own, celebrating the freedom that the Stars and Stripes represent. Our nation, our community, at its best.

God bless the USA.
